Ever heard of an exfoliating shampoo?! I hadn’t either until this Scalp Exfoliating Shampoo by Bouclème. Just like any other exfoliating product, the aim is to cleanse and remove dead skin cells, only in this case it’s specifically for the skin on your scalp. Having experienced the occasional dry scalp, I was intrigued to try this one out.
Bouclème specialise in natural haircare products for curly hair. I have naturally wavy hair myself, but I think there’s no reason why someone with straight hair couldn’t benefit from this product too! It’s designed to be used as a monthly treatment to help gently exfoliate the scalp, removing dead skin cells and any product build-up.
I have the smaller 100ml which is packaged in a little recyclable plastic jar. Since it’s only a once per month use, it’s going to last quite a while! The larger 250ml comes in a squeezy recyclable tube which would be ideal if multiple people in your household share the same products.
The formula is vegan, 96% naturally derived and free from the usual undesirable haircare ingredients like sulphates, silicones, propylene glycol, PEGs, parabens, and artificial fragrances. It has a lovely light but refreshing minty scent with spearmint, grapefruit and marjoram.
You use this as your would a usual shampoo, on wet hair and then massage through the scalp in circular motions. The main difference is it has these little hydrogenated castor oil beads for the exfoliation and it produces minimal foam for me.
It’s important to rinse the hair thoroughly a good couple of times to remove the little beads – the first time I used this I didn’t rinse well enough and was left finding the tiny little pieces in my hair for days later! I’ve found the best way to ensure they’re all washed out is by using conditioner afterwards and combing through the scalp before an extra rinse!
That might sound like a lot of effort, but considering this is only to be used as a special once per month treatment I don’t mind the extra steps for the results. After using this exfoliating shampoo, my hair always has a lot more volume at the roots. The scalp is left well cleansed but moisturised, my hair feels softer and my waves are left more defined.
I think an exfoliating shampoo will be a regular monthly treatment in my haircare routine now for keeping a dry scalp at bay and removing any build-up, especially from hard water. I much prefer this option instead of a clarifying shampoo and you get better results without leaving the hair feeling stripped! I’m really glad I gave this a try and recommend checking it out if you have a dry scalp or notice residue left from using hair styling products, even if you don’t have curly hair!
You can find their haircare products on the Bouclème website or online stockists like Naturisimo or Lookfantastic.
