If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be using deodorant in a balm or cream format over the conventional stuff, I’d have thought that was completely crazy! Fast-forward to now though and these types of deodorants are the total norm for me! American brands Soapwalla (reviewed here) and Schmidt’s (reviewed here) are already favourites of mine, but I always love using products from brands a little closer to home, so I was pleased to discover The Natural Deodorant Co. whose products are made here in England.
The Clean Deodorant Balm* keeps it simple when it comes to ingredients, containing only sodium bicarbonate, coconut oil, shea butter, arrowroot flour, olive oil and essential oils of geranium and lemon. The scent of the balm itself is very neutral so I think it would be great to see the range expand to include various scents in the future! To use, simply scoop a small amount from the jar and apply to clean skin, where it melts instantly. Most of the time, the balm stays solid in the jar so can be stored with the rest of the beauty stash or in the bathroom, but with the warmer weather (>24°C) I’ve been keeping it in the fridge to avoid separation.
Those of you who are familiar with natural deodorants will know that sodium bicarbonate is often a key ingredient and can be irritating to particularly sensitive skin, but I personally use this daily with no problems at all. On a typical office day, I don’t generally sweat much, but even with a full day out and about (with plenty of walking) the Clean Deodorant Balm keeps you smelling fresh all day! When it comes to those rare scorching hot days or intensive exercise though, I definitely feel the need to re-apply, but I expect the same with most other deodorants in extreme situations too!
The Natural Deodorant Co. get a big thumbs up from me for being environmentally conscious (it’s surprising the number of “green” brands that overlook environmental impacts!) – their packaging is recycled, the packing peanuts used for shipping are biodegradable and the jar itself is glass, so is of course recyclable when you finish off the product! If you like the sound of The Clean Deodorant Balm and fancy giving it a try, you can purchase direct from The Natural Deodorant Co. at £12.50 for 55g or £4.00+ for samples.
