I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to DIY, but this year I’ve been making an effort to experiment some more! I’ve kept it super simple so far and only tried out a few recipes, but hand soap is by far my most frequent homemade product. I much prefer making my own over shop-bought soaps, especially since it’s so easy, customisable and cost effective to make!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- Foaming soap dispenser (I re-used a cheap shop-bought one)
- Water
- Castile Liquid Soap
- Essential oils for scent (optional)
The method couldn’t be simpler! All you need to do is fill up the soap bottle with water, leaving a bit of space at the top for the soap and pump. It’s best to use distilled or filtered and boiled water as it helps keep the soap fresher for longer and the pump can sometimes get clogged up with impurities from plain tap water. Next you need to add the castile soap – my dispenser holds about 250ml of water and I find that adding 1½-2 tablespoons of castile soap works great, although you might need to slightly adjust the amount depending on the size of your bottle.
At the moment I’m using Dr Bronner’s Unscented Castile Soap as I love how you can customise the scent by adding a couple of drops of essential oil. I often use Tisserand lemon or peppermint essential oils for the antiseptic/antibacterial properties and they’re my favourite refreshing scents too. If you prefer, you could make it even simpler by just using one of the scented castile soaps instead! Finally, you just need to swish it around to mix and you have your very own foaming hand soap ready to use!
Have you made your own hand soap before? Will you be trying out this DIY?
