The plastic-free movement is definitely taking off, so it’s not surprising to see more brands offering alternatives to plastic packaging and moving towards glass, card and easily recyclable or biodegradable materials instead. Switching to plastic-free products is increasingly important to try where possible and toothpaste is one of the swaps mentioned in my Beginner’s Guide to Plastic Free Beauty & Toiletries.
Ben & Anna products are made with ingredients of natural origin, certified natural by NATRUE and are also vegan and cruelty free. They also choose to package their products in environmentally friendly material where possible, like paper tubes, paper bags and glass jars. Originally their product range began with deodorant, but they have since expanded to include dental, body and hair care too.
I’ve been using the Ben & Anna Sensitive Toothpaste (£8.95 for 100ml) for about 3 months now and I must say it’s one of the better natural and plastic-free toothpastes I’ve tried so far. It’s packaged in a glass jar and comes with a little bamboo spatula which can be used to scoop out the toothpaste for use. If you’re new to this style of toothpaste, it can take a little while to get used to the extra steps involved compared to squeezy plastic tubes, but it soon becomes second nature!
One little issue I’ve had is the thread on the lid of the jar often gets stuck which can be frustrating, but I’ve since discovered on their website that they recommend wiping the threads regularly to remove any residue and avoid oxidation so I’ll be trying this moving forward. If this doesn’t fix the problem I’d be tempted to decant the toothpaste into another jar instead for ease of use!
You only need to use a small amount of this toothpaste to get a decent foaming effect, unlike some other natural toothpastes which are non-foaming. This is great news for those of you that are new to natural toothpastes, so it could be an ideal first choice as the performance is very similar to the mainstream foaming products that you might be used to.
This toothpaste lives up to it’s claims of being suitable for sensitive teeth as I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in sensitivity since I’ve been using it. It contains chamomile for a gentle but thorough clean, along with sea buckthorn to help strengthen and protect the teeth. It has a fresh minty flavour and it’s also worth mentioning this is a fluoride-free toothpaste.
Overall, I’m really happy with how this toothpaste performs and it’s currently my top choice for a plastic-free natural toothpaste. I’m intrigued to check out some of their other plastic-free products now too!
